Attendance Percentage Calculator

See how many classes you can miss, or must attend in a row, to stay above 75% or your own rule.

How it's worked out

Your attendance is the classes you attended divided by the classes held, times 100:

attendance\displaystyle \text{attendance}=attendedheld×100\displaystyle {}= \frac{\text{attended}}{\text{held}} \times 100

Getting back above a target takes more classes than you might expect. Each class you attend adds 1 to the classes attended and 1 to the classes held, so the gap closes slowly. Write the target as a decimal p, so 75% is 0.75. The classes you must attend in a row are:

x\displaystyle x=p×held−attended1−p\displaystyle {}= \frac{p \times \text{held} - \text{attended}}{1 - p}

Round x up to a whole class. If you are above the target, the classes you can miss in a row come from the most classes held that your attended count still covers. Round this one down:

y\displaystyle y=attendedp−held\displaystyle {}= \frac{\text{attended}}{p} - \text{held}

Both of those assume nothing else changes. The rest of the term is a different question. With r classes still to come, the term ends with held + r classes, and you need p of them:

attend at least p×(held+r)−attended of the r left\text{attend at least } p \times (\text{held} + r) - \text{attended} \text{ of the } r \text{ left}

Worked examples

Priya is at 70% with 20 classes left

Priya has attended 28 of 40 lectures, which is 70%. Her college needs 75%. If she attends the next 8 in a row she has 36 of 48, exactly 75%. One fewer leaves her at 74.47%.

That only gets her back to the line for a day. The term has 20 more lectures, so it ends with 60. She needs 75% of 60, which is 45. That means attending 17 of the 20 left, and she can miss only 3. Her best possible finish is 80%.

Arjun checks one VTU course against 85%

Under VTU's 2022 scheme, each course needs 85%. Arjun has 34 of 42 classes in one course, which is 80.95%. He needs 12 classes in a row to reach 85%. With 14 classes left, the course ends with 56, and 85% of that is 47.6. Rounded up, he must attend 14 of the 14: every one of them.

He is above 75%, the lowest figure VTU can condone, so a short course could still be excused for a documented reason such as illness. Measured against 75%, he could miss 3 more in a row.

Meera has room to spare

Meera has 45 of 50, which is 90%. She could miss the next 10 classes in a row and sit at 45 of 60, exactly 75%. With 30 classes left in the term, she needs 15 of them, so she can miss 15 and still finish at 75%.

Reading your result

The tool gives two kinds of answer. "In a row" counts classes from today with nothing else missed. "Of the classes left" covers the whole rest of the term, so plan around that one once you know how many classes remain.

Early in a term each class moves the figure a lot. Missing one of the first 10 classes puts you at 90%. Missing one of 100 leaves you at 99%.

These are the rules the tool knows, from each body's own document:

RuleMinimumMay be condoned from
CBSE Class 10 and 12 board exams75%Exigencies only
JNTUH B.Tech (R-25)75%65%
VTU B.E. and B.Tech (2022 scheme)85% per course75%

CBSE's circular of 4 August 2025 repeats the 75% rule for board exams and allows a relaxation only for things like medical emergencies, with documents. JNTUH's R-25 rules let a college condone 65% to 75% on genuine grounds, with a fee. VTU's 2022 rules let the Vice Chancellor condone up to 10% below 85% in a course.

At JNTUH, 52 of 80 is exactly 65%. With 25 classes left, 75% is out of reach (the best finish is 73.33%), but staying at 65% needs 17 of the 25.

In US schools, a student who misses at least 10% of school days is counted as chronically absent, according to the Institute of Education Sciences. That is an attendance of 90% or lower, about 18 days in a typical year.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping once you are back at the line. Priya's 8 classes in a row get her to 75%, but the term still needs 17 of the 20 left. Plan with the classes left.
  • Trusting a rounded portal figure. A portal that shows whole numbers may display 74.47% as 75%. The rules say "a minimum of 75%", so check the counts: 35 of 47 is short.
  • Averaging subjects that had different numbers of classes. A 70% subject and a 90% subject do not simply meet in the middle. With 28 of 40 and 45 of 50, the total is 73 of 90, which is 81.11%. Use the subject sheet, and check whether your rule counts each course or the total.
  • Leaving out labs and tutorials. VTU counts lectures, tutorials and practicals in each course. Count the same sessions your college does.
  • Assuming a medical note makes up the classes. Under the CBSE, JNTUH and VTU rules, a documented absence still counts as missed. The note is what you need to ask for condonation, so keep it.
