Understanding Swim Pace

Swimming pace is measured per 100 meters (or yards) β€” the standard unit used by competitive swimmers and coaches worldwide. For reference, recreational swimmers typically average 2:00–3:00 per 100m; competitive amateur swimmers aim for 1:20–1:45; and elite swimmers can sustain under 1:00 per 100m.

Stroke Effort Differences

Freestyle (front crawl) is the most efficient stroke and serves as the baseline for comparison. Backstroke is approximately 3% slower at the same effort; breaststroke requires about 25% more energy for the same pace; butterfly is the most demanding, requiring roughly 35% more energy than freestyle. Individual Medley (IM) averages these across all four strokes.

Note: Yards (SCY) and meters (SCM/LCM) are not directly comparable. A 1:30/100yd pace converts to approximately 1:38/100m. FINA world records are set in 50m (long course) pools.
