Why Shoe Sizes Vary by Country
There is no universal shoe sizing standard. US sizes use a barleycorn-based system (1/3 inch per size); European (EU/Paris point) sizes are based on two-thirds of a centimeter; UK sizes are also barleycorn-based but differ from US by about 1.5 sizes; Japanese sizes are the foot length in centimeters. Always verify your size using a foot measurement rather than relying solely on past purchases.
The +0.5cm Rule
Properly fitting shoes should have approximately 1 cm (3/8 inch) of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This calculator adds 0.5cm to your measured foot length to approximate the correct shoe interior length. This prevents toe crowding and accounts for natural foot swelling during activity.
