Fence Calculator
Posts, Panels, Concrete & Material Estimator
Calculate the exact number of fence posts, panels or boards, concrete bags, and total materials for any fencing project. Supports wood privacy, picket, split-rail, chain-link, and vinyl styles with custom gate placement and per-unit cost estimation.
Fence Style
How to Calculate Fence Materials
Fence material quantities depend on three key factors: the total linear footage, the fence style, and the post spacing. For a standard privacy fence with posts 8 feet apart, you divide total footage by post spacing to get post count, then calculate the number of panels or pickets per section.
Post Spacing Guidelines by Fence Type
| Fence Type | Standard Spacing | Post Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy / Wood | 6–8 feet | 2 feet (1/3 above ground) |
| Chain Link | 8–10 feet | 2.5 feet |
| Split Rail | 8 feet | 2 feet |
| Vinyl | 6–8 feet | 2 feet |
| Picket | 6–8 feet | 18–24 inches |
Concrete for Post Holes
Each post hole typically requires 1 bag of fast-setting concrete (50 lb). Post holes should be at least twice the diameter of the post and 1/3 the total post length in depth. For example, an 8-foot post needs at least a 2.5-foot deep hole.
Waste Factor
Always order 10–15% more material than your calculation shows. Cuts at corners, gates, and terrain changes result in waste. Matching wood grain or vinyl color also requires extra stock.
