Carbon Footprint Calculator | Personal CO₂ Emissions Estimator
Estimate your annual personal carbon footprint across four major categories: home energy use, transportation, diet and food, and consumer spending. Shows total CO₂ equivalent in metric tons, comparison to US and global averages, biggest contributor breakdown, and practical reduction actions.
Understanding Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, organization, or activity, expressed as CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). This includes CO₂ from burning fossil fuels, plus methane (from livestock and landfills) and nitrous oxide, all converted to their CO₂ warming equivalent.
Global Context
| Benchmark | CO₂e / Year | Context |
|---|---|---|
| US average | 16 tons | One of the highest per-capita in the world |
| EU average | 8 tons | Half the US level due to smaller cars, public transit |
| World average | 4.7 tons | Large variance between rich and developing nations |
| Paris Agreement target | 2.3 tons | Required by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5°C |
| Sweden (benchmark) | 3.5 tons | High standard of living with low emissions |
Highest-Impact Actions
Research by Wynes & Nicholas (2017) found that four high-impact lifestyle choices can reduce emissions by 1–2 tons CO₂e each per year: having one fewer child (much larger), living car-free, avoiding one transatlantic flight, and eating a plant-based diet. These dwarf the impact of recycling, using efficient light bulbs, or driving a shorter route.
