Understanding Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, organization, or activity, expressed as CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). This includes CO₂ from burning fossil fuels, plus methane (from livestock and landfills) and nitrous oxide, all converted to their CO₂ warming equivalent.

Global Context

BenchmarkCO₂e / YearContext
US average16 tonsOne of the highest per-capita in the world
EU average8 tonsHalf the US level due to smaller cars, public transit
World average4.7 tonsLarge variance between rich and developing nations
Paris Agreement target2.3 tonsRequired by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5°C
Sweden (benchmark)3.5 tonsHigh standard of living with low emissions

Highest-Impact Actions

Research by Wynes & Nicholas (2017) found that four high-impact lifestyle choices can reduce emissions by 1–2 tons CO₂e each per year: having one fewer child (much larger), living car-free, avoiding one transatlantic flight, and eating a plant-based diet. These dwarf the impact of recycling, using efficient light bulbs, or driving a shorter route.

Methodology Note: Emissions factors are based on US EPA data, EIA electricity emission factors, and IPCC dietary lifecycle assessments. Individual results vary by region, utility provider, and specific consumption patterns. This is an estimate for awareness and comparison purposes.
